Chemist’s Statement
As a chemist I believe that it is important to have a sense of responsibility and stewardship, especially in terms of product safety and environmental impact. Chemists nearly always find themselves on the front end of the new product development process and therefore play a key role in assuring that the general public is protected when using the product and the product performs as intended. New product development certainly has its challenges, and the selection of appropriate raw materials for a given formula is one of them. Certainly safety is important, but so is performance. Safety should never be compromised to gain better performance.
My approach to new product formulation is one of common sense. I believe in utilizing all the resources at my disposal, including information technology, help from raw material suppliers, and past experience. The green movement is very powerful and is in evidence everywhere so it cannot be ignored. If there is a choice between two raw materials that perform equally well, I would always choose the “greener” of the two. By the same token, if two raw materials are equally “green”, I would always choose the one which performs better. Other factors such as cost and ease of handling must also be factored in of course.
A chemist’s job can be very interesting and exciting. It is always a great pleasure to see a product you have worked on, or perhaps even invented, succeed in the marketplace.
